When researching contractors for your home improvement needs, you will need to do a basic background check! HCI will pre-screen the contractors for you, saving you the time and hassle of doing it yourself.  However, it never hurts to be sure, so ask our contractors for the following things:

• the business address and phone number
• proof of insurance and bond
• a license number (where applicable)
• at least three references of previous work done.

Let HCI know about any questions or concerns that you have regarding your prospective contractors!

Each estimate that you receive needs to be closely reviewed to ensure that it contains the details you asked the contractor to include in your project. Make sure if you get more than one estimate that you compare them to see if all the contractors have included the same items.  The details can change your final costs substantially!  After you thoroughly review the estimates, contact the contractors with any questions.  Remember HCI is here to help you every step of the way when dealing with our contractors.

In addition to your written estimate, you need to get a contract in writing stating everything about your project. Some of the things that need to be spelled out will include:

• the total amount of the job
• when payments are due
• what happens if you don't make a payment on time
• when the job will start and when it will be completed
• legal remedies if either of you default
• any other details of your agreement. 

Make sure to protect yourself with waivers from all contractors and suppliers involved with your project.  If you need an example or explanation of normal customary

One last item to note is that, even with the best plans, changes will very often occur in any construction project and when they do, you need to get them in writing.  As with the contract, the change order needs to spell out: the specific nature of the change; the dollar amount of the change, whether it's a credit or an additional charge; the amended dollar amount of the contract; and any changes in the project's completion date.  Communication is the key to any successful project.  All of us here at HCI are dedicated to making sure you get the best project possible.
